It’s Top 10 Tuesday (hosted at The Broke and the Bookish) and the topic is:
Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT pick up a book
Oh we all have them. Our own personal little catch phrases that will keep us from clicking the “want to read” button. So, what are some of mine? Well, I’m glad you asked!
So, without further ado…
Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make Me NOT Pick Up A Book
The Next {insert name her} or Better than {insert name here}
I don’t need these phrases to sell books. It’s kind of insulting as well. So don’t do it.
Damsel-in-Distress
Seriously girls who need a man to fulfill their lives is cliche and just teaching our teens that they can’t be a capable person on their own merit.
Historical Fiction
If I’m going to read about history, I’d must rather read about things that actually happened. And there’s also that line “Truth is stranger than fiction.”
Werewolves, Fairies, Vampires, & Witches
Meh. I’m just not into these. Although I LOVE The Mortal Instruments series, so obviously there are exceptions to the rules. And Harry Potter has my heart, but witchcraft just isn’t something I see out.
Wish-fulfillment
I’m a normal American, who struggles to pay my bills and buy my books. So, people who can wave thousands of dollars at their problems don’t exactly make my heart go pitter-patter. Now, I’m not talking about all people with money, per-say, I’m just talking about knuckle heads that treat money like toilet paper.
Political
Ugh, politics rile me up as it is without having to read about them. It’s another case of there is enough real-world politics to read about to read political fiction.
Dangerous/Bad Boy
It’s kind of infuriating that every girl has to be demure and naive and every boy has to be brooding, mysterious, and dangerous. And tattoos do not equal bad boy.
Erotica/BDSM/50 Shades Anything
Nope, no thanks. Just not my cup of tea.
Westerns
Westerns/cowboys/home on the range… Not something that peaks my interest in the slightest.
Sports
Sports… I hate sports. So, why would I want to read about them? Plus athletes just make me feel bad about my lack of coordination. This does NOT include dance or gymnasts. I have no logic for this one, except that I was a dancer and a gymnast, so I can relate to them.
So, that’s it. What about you? What words/phrases make you say NO THANKS to a book?

I agree with all of them except the paranormal topics, love those books:) I do like real historical books as well, but historical fiction is a no-go for me.

It’s funny, because I love books with ghosts, zombies, and other paranormal beings/situations. And I’m sure if I read a book with those, I would like them, but I never get past the synopsis most times.
I never read western books so I can’t say anything about that one. But I also don’t read erotica/bdsm, yack!
🙂
Hah, I have to agree that I have never read a Western that I liked… except maybe The Indian in the Cupboard, that’s kind of a Western, right?
Ooh I did like that book series!
I’m always surprised when I encounter people who don’t like historical. I’ve lived and breathed historical for at least 25 years now, since age eight. I love reading it and writing it, and most of my hobbies/interests are based on history and historical things, like silent film, antique cars, coins, stamps, vinyl records, and typewriters.
It’s not something I don’t like per say, but more like something I’m not drawn to. That said, I loved the American Girls books as a kid, and I loved The Infernal Devices series. Both were set in the history, but focused on other aspects. Uh, I hope that made sense, I didn’t get much sleep!
I don’t read Westerns or sports books. I’m still reading all the paranormal! And I’m probably one of the few people who hasn’t read 50 Shades.
Yeah, I just can’t do it (50 shades and all like it), haha. 🙂
I agree with most of these, except that I haven’t *completely* given up on the paranormal and I do enjoy a good historical fiction novel. But I’m so tired of “for fans of” or “the next blah-blah-blah”. 🙂
I still like paranormal in regards to ghosts, zombies, etc… Just those four tend to be a turn off.
🙂
I agree with political. Nothing puts me off more than politics!
Glad I’m not the only one!
Totally agree with vampires, politics and Westerns! They’re definitely not my thing! Great list 🙂
Thanks! 🙂
Great list! I wish I had included politics on mine. And I agree damsels in distress are such a turn off.
Thanks Maggie!
I totally agree about sports. I’m not into them in real life so I wouldn’t be in to them in books! Unless the story is amazing and has to do with sports, like the movie A League of their Own!
Yeah, I can get on board with a good sports movie too.
I agree with most of these except paranormal books (I love them!). The Next… and Damsel in Distress don’t necessarily bother me if the story is good, but the rest of yours all either made it onto my list or could easily have!
You can find my TTT here.
Yeah, I’m willing to break my own rules if it is good, but for the most part I just try to avoid.
Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Yes, ugh, politics. No thank you.
And I can’t believe I never thought of sports before!
Great list & thanks for stopping by my TTT! (:
Thanks and same to you Kelly!
Oh, I’m generally anti western as well. Totally not my thing. I guess I could have included that as my #10. Haha!
LOL, I did that too. I saw other lists and I was like “Dang, I forgot about how much I hate that!”
I agree with everything you said!! Especially the whole this book is going to be the next….. NOOOO!!! Nothing is ever, EVER going to replace that book so just stop trying….I get even angrier when it is compared to Harry Potter……Grrrr….Great list!
Thanks for stopping by My TTT
Yes, the Harry Potter one is just bogus. It’s just not gonna happen.
ever since 50 shades there’s so many “dangerous” billionaire “heroes” lately and it’s so annoying. and damsels in distress who gets in stupid situations because they’re trying to be step up or be brave or whatever? grrrr… nothing kills a book more than those.
my TTT.

I know right!
🙂
Great list. I agree with most of them! I used to think I liked reading about vampires, werewolves, and such things, but I’m so over it. And I’ve never really been all that into fairies and witches.

I know right. You can only read the same subject over and over so many times.
I am so far from sporty, and my school is reading Michael Oher’s I Beat the Odds (he’s the guy The Blind Side is based on) for our common read this fall. It was alright, but I never would have read it otherwise.
I’m definitely not into Westerns either. I almost put that on my list. I also hate the Damsel-in-Distress thing, too! I don’t like it when books make it seem that girls HAVE to have a boyfriend/husband in order to be happy.
It’s okay to have a man as long as they realize they don’t HAVE to have one to survive. It just teaches girls they can’t be anything unless they are in a relationship.
I hate the whole Damsel-in-Distress thing too! It drives me crazy how some books make it seem that girls HAVE to have a boyfriend/husband in order to be happy. UGH.
Ha! I didn’t even think of politics or western. I’m the same on those. I love historical fiction, though. Well… certain types. If I don’t know anything about the time period, then I’m not interested. Thanks for the comment and follow!
I maybe haven’t given it much of a try, but I never get interested by the synopses.
And thanks back! 🙂
Westerns and sports I don’t want to read either.. I don’t even want to give them a try. I am just not interested in them at all!
Angie
Here is my list:
My top ten
Haha I know I’m the same way!
thanks for stopping by my blog! As for your question on if there are unicorn books. i think there are.. and it kind of turns me off. haha. i’m going to do some research and see what kind of books there are that are about unicorns. maybe it’s a shifting thing?
anyways, great list!
xo
Haha, I don’t know why, but I’m fascinated to hear what you find out. So weird!
I pretty much agreed with all of yours except for the paranormal. I haven’t gotten tired of that yet with the exception of fairies. I find I have trouble getting into books where the main characters are fairies lately. Thanks for stopping by my list!
I still love supernatural and ghosts and zombies. The others are just eh.
I agree with most of these except the paranormal. I love vampires, werewolves, fairies, witches, etc. I’m glad that you said you love The Mortal Instruments though because that is one of my all time favorite book series! Great list and thanks for stopping by My TTT
It’s weird b/c I love ghosts, weird supernatural stuff, and zombies. The others just don’t interest me as much.
And yes TMI is one of my favorites!! ❤
Thanks for stopping by! I always think that I don’t like historical fiction, but then I always manage to find something I love. Have you read The Diviners by Libba Bray? Totally creepy story set in the 1920s. Love.
No, but I just got it and I’m really excited about it!
Ah yes…or rather, NO, on politics, erotica, and sports. Blah. I get so bored/grossed out.
Great list!

Haha, yes pretty much!
Thanks for joining 🙂
Yeah, I’m not down with erotica either— (50 shades of anything)— LOL Political isn’t my cup of tea either.
🙂
