About the Book
Where You’ll Find Me
By: Erin Fletcher
Pub: Entangled Teen
Pub Date: January 7, 2014
Genre: YA, ContemporarySynopsis:
When Hanley Helton discovers a boy living in her garage, she knows she should kick him out. But Nate is too charming to be dangerous. He just needs a place to get away, which Hanley understands. Her own escape methods —vodka, black hair dye, and pretending the past didn’t happen—are more traditional, but who is she to judge?
Nate doesn’t tell her why he’s in her garage, and she doesn’t tell him what she’s running from. Soon, Hanley’s trading her late-night escapades for all-night conversations and stolen kisses. But when Nate’s recognized as the missing teen from the news, Hanley isn’t sure which is worse: that she’s harboring a fugitive, or that she’s in love with one.

Unconventional Ideas
Most of the time, I get my writing ideas in fairly conventional ways – by reading other books, while driving, or through daydreams that usually take place at my day job (don’t tell my boss). But the idea for Where You’ll Find Me? Not so conventional.
It was one of those winter days when just stepping outside sucks the breath right out of your lungs. I walked into my family’s pitch-black, freezing cold garage. Before I could hit the light switch, I sneezed. Instantly, an idea formed: wouldn’t it be weird if someone in the garage said, “bless you?” And wouldn’t it be weirder if that person was actually living in the garage?
The idea grew to include characters. Hanley became the girl who sneezed. Nate became Garage Boy, who lived next to her dad’s tarp-covered classic car.
Then I had an idea, characters, and two big questions:
1. Where was Hanley going when she sneezed? If she had to wait until she was in the garage to make any noise, she was probably sneaking out. But why?
2. Why was Nate in Hanley’s garage? It’s cold, uncomfortable, and risky. What could possibly be worth all of that? Was he a runaway? A criminal? Why did he pick Hanley’s garage? And why did she let him stay?
It took a while before I could answer the questions surrounding Nate. Like, to the point where I started complaining to my friends that my character wouldn’t tell me why he was living in my other character’s garage. (The non-writer friends kind of questioned my sanity.)
One night, just as I was falling asleep, I came up with a possible answer to those questions. I shot up in bed and frantically scribbled down notes that I hoped would still make sense once I woke up. Thankfully, when morning came, my middle-of-the-night epiphany still worked. When I shared the notes with my critique group and they agreed that I had indeed discovered Nate’s secret, I sat down and wrote the rest of the book.
So what are Hanley’s and Nate’s secrets? You’ll have to read to find out!
And if you’re a writer, try looking for ideas in unconventional places – even your own garage.
