About the Book
Ask Again Later
Pub Date: 3.11.14
Despite what her name might suggest, Heart has zero interest in complicated romance. So when her brilliant plan to go to prom with a group of friends is disrupted by two surprise invites, Heart knows there’s only one drama-free solution: flip a coin.
Heads: The jock. He might spend all night staring at his ex or throw up in the limo, but how bad can her brother’s best friend really be?
Tails: The theater geek…with a secret. What could be better than a guy who shares all Heart’s interests–even if he wants to share all his feelings?
Heart’s simple coin flip has somehow given her the chance to live out both dates. But where her prom night ends up might be the most surprising thing of all…
*I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was adorable, there’s no two ways about it. From the table of contents on, we get a clear view of the distinctive voice that is Liz Czukas. That made it not only easy to get into the book (and characters!), but let me know right off the bat what kind of book to be expecting. A little quirky, a lot cute, and fused with witty banter. Even if it is about prom (ugh, don’t remind me of those days), I could really get into this story.
The book begins with a girl named Heart whose mom left her family when she was 19 — right after Heart was born. She has sworn off love and relationships, maintaining that Captain Jack Sparrow is her one true love. She doesn’t believe in fate (and thus gets a heavy dose of it over the course of the book). She’s quirky and fun and has planned to go to prom with her No-Drama Prom-a group of friends.
And then… she gets asked to prom. And then… her brother offers her up as a consolation date to a friend who just broke up with her boyfriend. Not knowing what to do, she flips a coin.
Now, up until this point, I had no idea how the rest of the book was going to go. I mean, I understand the book is about prom, but I expected there to be more build up to picking the right date. Instead, I was surprised by the clever Czukas who did something entirely different. We as a reader get to experience prom twice. One on her date with Troy and another on her date with Ryan. So long no drama prom. -a.
This is the first book (or the only one I can remember as of late) I’ve read that had back to back alternative realities. This could be seen as redundant if not done right, but Czuakas of course pulled it off. Even though one scene to the next took place during the same time of night, it was almost like reading a whole new story when we flipped from heads to tails.
At this point, the book could have gotten REALLY confusing. Like a book told from two POV’s when you can’t tell who is talking, except two different time lines. Except it wasn’t. I was able to easily keep track of where I was in the story and which time line I was in. Which speaks to the talent of Czukas.
From the beginning, it is made obvious who the true love interest is. I knew a couple of pages in, but I loved the journey it took to get there. Some seriously crazy hi jinks ensue throughout the night and there were lots of laughs on my part.
We soon find that even though the circumstances are different, things that happen in one reality, happen in another. Overall, the point was not who she picked to go with, but that the choices were all leading to a similar destination.
The characters were all fantastic and had great personality, the writing was clever and fantastic, and the entire premise was just plain adorable. Overall, this book is saccharine sweet, will make you laugh out loud, and will bring up fond memories of prom and your first love.
