Top Ten Tuesday (8)
It’s Top 10 Tuesday (hosted at The Broke and the Bookish) and the topic is:
Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT pick up a book
Oh we all have them. Our own personal little catch phrases that will keep us from clicking the “want to read” button. So, what are some of mine? Well, I’m glad you asked!
So, without further ado…
Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make Me NOT Pick Up A Book
The Next {insert name her} or Better than {insert name here}
I don’t need these phrases to sell books. It’s kind of insulting as well. So don’t do it.
Damsel-in-Distress
Seriously girls who need a man to fulfill their lives is cliche and just teaching our teens that they can’t be a capable person on their own merit.
Historical Fiction
If I’m going to read about history, I’d must rather read about things that actually happened. And there’s also that line “Truth is stranger than fiction.”
Werewolves, Fairies, Vampires, & Witches
Meh. I’m just not into these. Although I LOVE The Mortal Instruments series, so obviously there are exceptions to the rules. And Harry Potter has my heart, but witchcraft just isn’t something I see out.
Wish-fulfillment
I’m a normal American, who struggles to pay my bills and buy my books. So, people who can wave thousands of dollars at their problems don’t exactly make my heart go pitter-patter. Now, I’m not talking about all people with money, per-say, I’m just talking about knuckle heads that treat money like toilet paper.
Political
Ugh, politics rile me up as it is without having to read about them. It’s another case of there is enough real-world politics to read about to read political fiction.
Dangerous/Bad Boy
It’s kind of infuriating that every girl has to be demure and naive and every boy has to be brooding, mysterious, and dangerous. And tattoos do not equal bad boy.
Erotica/BDSM/50 Shades Anything
Nope, no thanks. Just not my cup of tea.
Westerns
Westerns/cowboys/home on the range… Not something that peaks my interest in the slightest.
Sports
Sports… I hate sports. So, why would I want to read about them? Plus athletes just make me feel bad about my lack of coordination. This does NOT include dance or gymnasts. I have no logic for this one, except that I was a dancer and a gymnast, so I can relate to them.
So, that’s it. What about you? What words/phrases make you say NO THANKS to a book?
